As is often the case in regional cities, local public transportation in Japan is very complicated and difficult to understand.
Kushiro, a regional city in Hokkaido, is no exception.

In particular, the way to get on a bus is unique, and it is even more confusing for visitors from overseas or from the city.
Even I, a Japanese, remember that when I first arrived in Kushiro, I did not know what to do when boarding a bus or how to get off.

You can arrange a rental car at Kushiro Airport, so if you can drive a car or want to visit various places other than Kushiro by car, it would be better to rent a car.

If you do not rent a car, you can take a shuttle bus from Kushiro Airport to downtown Kushiro.

After getting off the plane and passing the baggage collection area, you will soon reach the exit. Kushiro Airport is a small airport, so you will find it easily.

There is a tourist information center next to the exit, and tickets for the shuttle bus to central Kushiro can be purchased from a ticket vending machine next to the counter.

You can also rent a car at this desk.

The ticket machine displays the fare for each destination, so please check the price before purchasing a ticket. The shuttle bus from Kushiro Airport to downtown Kushiro costs 940 yen.

Please note that there are several bus stops in downtown Kushiro, including “Fisherman’s Wharf MOO,” “Kushiro City Hall,” and “Kushiro Station.

Therefore, you should confirm in advance which bus stop you want to get off at before buying a ticket.
If you do not know where to get off, ask the staff at the counter.

If you want to go to Washo Market, buy a ticket for “Kushiro Station”; if you want to go to Hushimai Bridge or Fisherman’s Wharf MOO, buy a ticket for “Fisherman’s Wharf MOO”.

If you want to go to Kushiro Marsh by bus or take a train, you can go to Kushiro Station anyway.

After purchasing a ticket, leave the airport. Shuttle buses to the center of the city are waiting right in front of you when you exit the exit.

Buses are scheduled to depart 10-25 minutes after your flight arrives at the airport, so there is no need to wait for hours and there is no need to rush.

Even if your flight is delayed, it will be taken into consideration, so you can take the bus with peace of mind.

It takes about 50 minutes from Kushiro Airport to downtown Kushiro.

When the bus stop you want to get off at is announced, press the button on the window, and when you arrive at the bus stop, hand your ticket to the driver and get off.
If you have left your luggage on the bus, don’t forget to tell the driver.

Enjoy your trip to Kushiro!
