Notsuke Peninsula is known as the farthest point in Hokkaido.

Located at the eastern end of Hokkaido, between the Shiretoko Peninsula and the Nemuro Peninsula, the Notsuke Peninsula is one of the most pristine natural areas in Hokkaido.

Beautiful scenery like that of Notsuke Peninsula can never be found in Central Hokkaido, where the famous sightseeing spots Sapporo and Otaru are located, or in Southern Hokkaido, where Hakodate is famous for its beautiful night views.

野付半島

Notsuke Peninsula, located between Rausu and Nemuro in Shiretoko, is a perfect base for a trip to the east of Hokkaido, and is especially popular among bird lovers.

Notsuke Peninsula

The Notsuke Peninsula is said to be “the end of the world,” and its diverse natural environment, including salt marshes, grasslands, and virgin forests, creates a landscape that cannot be found anywhere else.

A 30-minute walk along the promenade from the back of the Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center will take you to Todowara, a unique view of the Notsuke Peninsula.

トドワラ

Todowara means a field of Abies sachalinensis, and there used to be a virgin forest of Abies sachalinensis and Ezo spruce. Incidentally, Abies sachalinensis is a type of pine found only in Hokkaido in Japan.

However, subsidence caused seawater to erode the land, resulting in a forest of standing dead trees.

The number of these dead trees is also decreasing due to weathering, and it is said that this view will eventually disappear.

The area is often shrouded in fog during the spring and summer, creating a fantastic sight.

Notsuke Peninsula is also a popular bird-watching spot, attracting birdwatchers not only from Japan but also from all over the world, especially in winter!

More than 230 species of wild birds can be observed, including white-tailed eagles, red-crowned cranes, and Steller’s sea eagles.

The rich nature of Notsuke Peninsula attracts many tourists from home and abroad in summer, but in winter, you can see a very beautiful Notsuke Peninsula that is completely different from that of summer.

The Notsuke Peninsula has a long and narrow road running through it, surrounded by the sea on both sides.

The left side (north side) toward the tip is the Sea of Okhotsk and the right side (south side) is Notsuke Bay, which is a very unique sight.

In winter, Notsuke Bay freezes over, providing a special view. Notsuke Bay is the only place in Japan where the sea freezes over, so it is a sight that can only be seen here.

And if you are lucky, you can see drift ice in the Sea of Okhotsk.

The drift ice is usually observed in Abashiri and Shiretoko on the Sea of Okhotsk side of Hokkaido, but sometimes it goes around the Shiretoko Peninsula and comes as far as Notsuke Peninsula.

This is a scene from mid-February, and the drift ice is all the way to the shore.

You cannot always see drift ice on Notsuke Peninsula, but if you visit Notsuke Peninsula in winter, keep your eyes peeled for drift ice.

The promenade to Todowara is filled with a variety of beautiful flowers in summer, but in winter it takes on a completely different look.

トドワラの桟橋

The pier leading to Todowara is surrounded by the sea in summer, but in winter, the whole area is frozen over and covered with ice.

トドワラ

The Notsuke Peninsula offers spectacular views, but the wind blows on the bridge, so the temperature can be minus in winter, so make sure you are well-protected against the cold.

While it is great to visit in the summer, the Notsuke Peninsula is also a great place to enjoy the spectacular scenery in the winter.

If you want to experience activities as well as just looking around the beautiful Notsuke Peninsula, the Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center offers a sledding experience tour and a walking tour over the frozen bay, so join them!
